This is a common theme running through Christmas Carol literature. Conceived as a fun, accessible overture for young bands or bands with limited instrumentation, A Celebration of Bells highlights two of the most beloved Christmas carols associated with bells. The piece begins with a joyful brass bell-tone fanfare accompanied by trilling woodwinds. The introduction gives way to mostly-unison woodwind rendition of I Heard the Bells On Christmas Day. The brass then further works out the melody with a more chordal presentation. The woodwinds present a short, light interlude, followed by an explosive snare drum and full-band chord one key higher than the beginning. The piece shifts to a Jingle Bells march. Following the march, the music modulates back down one key and returns to a full band, Maestoso version of I Heard the Bells. The overture comes to a close with a return to the familiar introductory bell tones. This piece is sure to be a festive hit for both your students and their audience! |
