De Brébeuf wrote the carol for the Huron/Wendat (Wyandot) people in their native Huron language. Huron Carol has left a legacy as Canada’s “First Christmas Carol,” and is still widely performed in Canada today. Huron Carol is written in the Medieval Dorian mode (scale). While sounding “mostly minor,” the Dorion mode has its own unique sound. Although this song could be performed in the natural minor scale, it would lose the characteristic color of the “major sixth tone” in the Dorian scale. In addition to the Dorian scale, this arrangement uses multiple other compositional elements connected with Huron Carol’s Medieval origins (will be updated once the piece is published). |
